From celebrations of identity to shows of protest, parades have been central to our culture. With Mardi Gras on the horizon, the Folger considers how pageantry has led to participation in our democratic process, looking at the unique history of DC’s parade culture while also examining the historical routes of some of our nation’s most celebrated processions.

About Inside the Season

Inside the Season is a new programming series from the Folger Shakespeare Library designed to highlight our seasonal theme through talks and hands-on activities that explore specific related topics. Each multidisciplinary talk brings together experts and artists in the field to show the variety of ways in which these ideas can be explored and expanded upon. This year we dive into Whose Democracy? to ignite conversation about power and participation.
