We all know how the story of Romeo and Juliet ends. But if it’s been a minute since you spent time with the source material, here’s a short refresher. External factors like family, religion, and government had an outsized impact on the demise of the titular characters.
So, we find ourselves asking, how in 2024 can the next generation rise above existing societal systems and forge a better future for themselves?

Katrina Heil (she/her) is a sophomore at George Washington University majoring in theatre and political science. Originally from San Diego, CA, she is currently working as the Social Impact Intern for the Kennedy Center, having previously worked as an Artistic Intern for the La Jolla Playhouse. A lover of the arts and advocacy, Katrina has been a certified “theatre kid” since childhood, performing in professional and semi-professional theatre since she was seven years old. She also serves as the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Director for the GW Student Theatre Council and as a costume assistant in the GW Costume Shop.

Rosie Couture is a junior at Harvard University from Arlington, Virginia studying Social Studies and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Rosie is a co-founder and Executive Director of the Young Feminist Party–a movement of over 14,000 young people organizing for the publication of the Equal Rights Amendment and advancement of gender justice. At school, Rosie organizes with the Harvard Feminist Coalition, leads the Institute of Politics’ Gender & Sexuality Coalition, and researches social movement-building with the Radcliffe Institute and the Nonviolent Action Lab. In her free time, she likes to play music, drink lattes, and make films.

Paloma Gomez (they/them) is a freshman at Georgetown University from Cary, North Carolina, studying Government and History. Paloma serves as a board member of Georgetown’s chapter of BridgeUSA, an organization dedicated to fighting political division, as well as participating on the board of various LGBTQ+ organizations on campus. In their free time, Paloma likes to spend time with their friends, take long walks around DC, and stop to smell the flowers.

Bryan Turcios is currently a junior at Bell High School. For the past two years, he has been an active member of his school’s engineering class. Beyond his academic pursuits, Bryan has a strong interest in playwriting and is also dedicated to sports.

Inside the Season is a new programming series from the Folger Shakespeare Library designed to highlight our seasonal theme through talks and hands-on activities that explore specific related topics. Each multidisciplinary talk brings together experts and artists in the field to show the variety of ways in which these ideas can be explored and expanded upon. This year we dive into Whose Democracy? to ignite conversation about power and participation.
