This Folger Method Course will go deep into teaching Hamlet. Over the course of three days, Mentor Teachers Ashley Bessicks and Stefanie Jochman—co-authors of the unit that will be central to the Folger Guide to Teaching Hamlet (to be published by Simon and Schuster)—will guide you through the principles and the essential practices of the Folger Method and provide you, and all your students, with a way to approach not just Hamlet, but ANY complex text.
What you will learn:
Over the course of three days, you will do a deep dive into teaching Hamlet and will:
- Experience all parts of the Folger Method
- Engage with Hamlet and a mix of authors and texts from across time, place, culture, gender, race, and more in new ways offering new insights
- Learn techniques for putting students right in the center of learning in a way that helps ALL students read with skill and confidence
- Work with colleagues to apply what you’ve learned to your own classroom
- Come away with fresh ideas and new approaches to teaching Hamlet

One (1) graduate credit available through Trinity Washington University for $125.
Group Rate
$475 per teacher for groups of three or more teachers from the same school or school district who enroll in the same course. To register a group, please follow the steps below. If a Teacher Member is part of a group, the Teacher Member rate will apply to that teacher’s registration. Become a Teacher Member.
To register a group you need to:
- Call the Folger ticketing office at 202-544-7077 with all of the information below
- Full name of EACH teacher, EACH teacher’s email address, school name and/or school district, EACH teacher’s email address, EACH teacher’s phone number
- Let the ticketing office know which (if any) members of the group are current Teacher Members (and the email they are registered under) so they can confirm Teacher Member rate
- Register and pay for ALL teachers in the group in one transaction
Scholarships
We are excited to be able to offer a limited number of scholarships. To apply, all you need to do is write an email with the subject line SCHOLARSHIP SUMMER 2023 and tell us in one paragraph the name of the course for which you are applying, why you want to take the course, and why you are requesting a scholarship. Stefanie Jochman
Stefanie Jochman teaches 10th grade and AP English in Oakton, VA. She is a Folger Education workshop leader and served as a Master Teacher at the 2016, 2018, and 2021 Folger Teaching Shakespeare Institutes. In 2016, she earned the Golden Apple Award from the Greater Green Bay Chamber of Commerce, and she is a contributing writer to the Moving Writers blog. She enjoys traveling to literary destinations and being a devoted auntie. Stefanie is also a contributor to The Folger Guides to Teaching Shakespeare (forthcoming from Simon and Schuster, 2024).

Ashley Bessicks
Ashley Bessicks is a literacy coach who partners with school leaders and teachers with the goal of increasing student engagement and achievement. She was a participant in Folger’s 2014 Teaching Shakespeare Institute. After spending nearly a decade in the classroom serving Washington, DC students in grades 9-12, Ashley leads professional learning for educators in Baltimore, MD and across the country. A Buffalo, New York native, Ashley spends her time reading and exploring with family. Ashley is also a contributor to The Folger Guides to Teaching Shakespeare (forthcoming from Simon and Schuster, 2024).
