Synopsis:

One of Alcibiades’ soldiers discovers Timon’s tomb and, since he cannot read Timon’s epitaph, he resolves to bring a wax impression of it to Alcibiades.

Enter a Soldier in the woods, seeking Timon.

SOLDIER 
2451  By all description this should be the place.
2452  Who’s here? Speak, ho! No answer? What is this?
He reads an epitaph.
2453  Timon is dead, who hath out-stretched his span.
2454  Some beast read this; there does not live a man.

2455 5 Dead, sure, and this his grave. What’s on this tomb
2456  I cannot read. The character I’ll take with wax.
2457  Our captain hath in every figure skill,
2458  An aged interpreter, though young in days.

2459  Before proud Athens he’s set down by this,
2460 10 Whose fall the mark of his ambition is.
He exits.
