Measure for Measure - Act 4, scene 1Act 4, scene 1
Scene 1
Synopsis:
Isabella reports to the “Friar” about the arrangements made with Angelo for that night’s assignation; Mariana agrees to sleep with Angelo in Isabella’s place.
Enter Mariana, and Boy singing.Song.
1787 Take, O take those lips away,
1788 That so sweetly were forsworn,
1789 And those eyes, the break of day,
1790 Lights that do mislead the morn.
1791 5 But my kisses bring again, bring again,
1792 Seals of love, but sealed in vain, sealed in vain.
Enter Duke ⌜as a Friar.⌝
MARIANA, ⌜to Boy⌝
1793 Break off thy song and haste thee quick away.
1794 Here comes a man of comfort, whose advice
1795 Hath often stilled my brawling discontent.
⌜Boy exits.⌝
1796 10 I cry you mercy, sir, and well could wish
1797 You had not found me here so musical.
1798 Let me excuse me, and believe me so,
1799 My mirth it much displeased, but pleased my woe.
DUKE, ⌜as Friar⌝
1800 ’Tis good, though music oft hath such a charm
1801 15 To make bad good and good provoke to harm.
1802 I pray you tell me, hath anybody inquired for me

here today? Much upon this time have I promised1804 here to meet.
MARIANA 1805 You have not been inquired after. I have sat
1806 20 here all day.
Enter Isabella.
DUKE, ⌜as Friar⌝ 1807 I do constantly believe you. The time is
1808 come even now. I shall crave your forbearance a
1809 little. Maybe I will call upon you anon for some
1810 advantage to yourself.
MARIANA 1811 25I am always bound to you.She exits.
DUKE, ⌜as Friar⌝ 1812 Very well met, and welcome.
1813 What is the news from this good deputy?
ISABELLA
1814 He hath a garden circummured with brick,
1815 Whose western side is with a vineyard backed;
1816 30 And to that vineyard is a planchèd gate
1817 That makes his opening with this bigger key.
1818 This other doth command a little door
1819 Which from the vineyard to the garden leads.
1820 There have I made my promise, upon the
1821 35 Heavy middle of the night, to call upon him.
DUKE, ⌜as Friar⌝
1822 But shall you on your knowledge find this way?
ISABELLA
1823 I have ta’en a due and wary note upon ’t.
1824 With whispering and most guilty diligence,
1825 In action all of precept, he did show me
1826 40 The way twice o’er.
DUKE, ⌜as Friar⌝ 1827 Are there no other tokens
1828 Between you ’greed concerning her observance?
ISABELLA
1829 No, none, but only a repair i’ th’ dark,
1830 And that I have possessed him my most stay
1831 45 Can be but brief, for I have made him know
1832 I have a servant comes with me along

1833
That stays upon me, whose persuasion is1834 I come about my brother.
DUKE, ⌜as Friar⌝ 1835 ’Tis well borne up.
1836 50 I have not yet made known to Mariana
1837 A word of this.—What ho, within; come forth.
Enter Mariana.
1838 ⌜To Mariana.⌝ I pray you be acquainted with this
1839 maid.
1840 She comes to do you good.
ISABELLA 1841 55I do desire the like.
DUKE, ⌜as Friar, to Mariana⌝
1842 Do you persuade yourself that I respect you?
MARIANA
1843 Good friar, I know you do, and have found it.
DUKE, ⌜as Friar⌝
1844 Take then this your companion by the hand,
1845 Who hath a story ready for your ear.
1846 60 I shall attend your leisure. But make haste.
1847 The vaporous night approaches.
MARIANA, ⌜to Isabella⌝ 1848 Will ’t please you walk aside?
⌜Isabella and Mariana⌝ exit.
DUKE
1849 O place and greatness, millions of false eyes
1850 Are stuck upon thee; volumes of report
1851 65 Run with these false, and, most contrarious, quest
1852 Upon thy doings; thousand escapes of wit
1853 Make thee the father of their idle dream
1854 And rack thee in their fancies.
Enter Mariana and Isabella.
⌜DUKE, as Friar⌝ 1855 Welcome. How agreed?
ISABELLA
1856 70 She’ll take the enterprise upon her, father,
1857 If you advise it.

DUKE, ⌜as Friar⌝
1858
It is not my consent1859 But my entreaty too.
ISABELLA, ⌜to Mariana⌝ 1860 Little have you to say
1861 75 When you depart from him, but, soft and low,
1862 “Remember now my brother.”
MARIANA 1863 Fear me not.
DUKE, ⌜as Friar⌝
1864 Nor, gentle daughter, fear you not at all.
1865 He is your husband on a precontract.
1866 80 To bring you thus together ’tis no sin,
1867 Sith that the justice of your title to him
1868 Doth flourish the deceit. Come, let us go.
1869 Our corn’s to reap, for yet our tithe’s to sow.
They exit.
