Synopsis:

Cordelia’s French army is defeated.

Alarum within. Enter, with Drum and Colors, Lear,
Cordelia, and Soldiers, over the stage, and exit.

Enter Edgar and Gloucester.


EDGAR 
3238  Here, father, take the shadow of this tree
3239  For your good host. Pray that the right may thrive.
3240  If ever I return to you again,
3241  I’ll bring you comfort.
GLOUCESTER  3242 5 Grace go with you, sir.
Edgar exits.
Alarum and Retreat within.

Enter Edgar.

EDGAR 
3243  Away, old man. Give me thy hand. Away.
3244  King Lear hath lost, he and his daughter ta’en.
3245  Give me thy hand. Come on.
GLOUCESTER 
3246  No further, sir. A man may rot even here.

3247 10 What, in ill thoughts again? Men must endure
3248  Their going hence even as their coming hither.
3249  Ripeness is all. Come on.
[GLOUCESTER  3250  And that’s true too.]
They exit.
