Scene 7

Synopsis:

A Roman senator announces that the Roman army attacking Britain will be under the control of Caius Lucius and that it will be augmented by Roman gentry.

Enter two Roman Senators, and Tribunes.

FIRST SENATOR
2187  This is the tenor of the Emperor’s writ:
2188  That since the common men are now in action
2189  ’Gainst the Pannonians and Dalmatians,
2190  And that the legions now in Gallia are
2191 5 Full weak to undertake our wars against
2192  The fall’n-off Britons, that we do incite
2193  The gentry to this business. He creates
2194  Lucius proconsul; and to you the tribunes
2195  For this immediate levy, he commends
2196 10 His absolute commission. Long live Caesar!
TRIBUNE
2197  Is Lucius general of the forces?
SECOND SENATOR  2198  Ay.
TRIBUNE
2199  Remaining now in Gallia?
FIRST SENATOR  2200  With those legions
2201 15 Which I have spoke of, whereunto your levy
2202  Must be supplyant. The words of your commission
2203  Will tie you to the numbers and the time
2204  Of their dispatch.
TRIBUNE  2205  We will discharge our duty.
They exit.
