Cymbeline - Act 1, scene 2Act 1, scene 2
Scene ⌜2⌝
Synopsis:
An encounter between Cloten and Posthumus, reported in 1.1, is here discussed by Cloten and two lords.
Enter Cloten and two Lords.FIRST LORD 0222 Sir, I would advise you to shift a shirt. The
0223 violence of action hath made you reek as a sacrifice.
0224 Where air comes out, air comes in. There’s
0225 none abroad so wholesome as that you vent.
CLOTEN 0226 5If my shirt were bloody, then to shift it. Have I
0227 hurt him?
SECOND LORD, ⌜aside⌝ 0228 No, faith, not so much as his
0229 patience.
FIRST LORD 0230 Hurt him? His body’s a passable carcass if
0231 10 he be not hurt. It is a thoroughfare for steel if it be
0232 not hurt.
SECOND LORD, ⌜aside⌝ 0233 His steel was in debt; it went o’
0234 th’ backside the town.
CLOTEN 0235 The villain would not stand me.
SECOND LORD, ⌜aside⌝ 0236 15No, but he fled forward still,
0237 toward your face.
FIRST LORD 0238 Stand you? You have land enough of your
0239 own, but he added to your having, gave you some
0240 ground.

SECOND LORD, ⌜aside⌝
0241
20As many inches as you have0242 oceans. Puppies!
CLOTEN 0243 I would they had not come between us.
SECOND LORD, ⌜aside⌝ 0244 So would I, till you had measured
0245 how long a fool you were upon the ground.
CLOTEN 0246 25And that she should love this fellow and
0247 refuse me!
SECOND LORD, ⌜aside⌝ 0248 If it be a sin to make a true election,
0249 she is damned.
FIRST LORD 0250 Sir, as I told you always, her beauty and
0251 30 her brain go not together. She’s a good sign, but I
0252 have seen small reflection of her wit.
SECOND LORD, ⌜aside⌝ 0253 She shines not upon fools, lest
0254 the reflection should hurt her.
CLOTEN 0255 Come, I’ll to my chamber. Would there had
0256 35 been some hurt done!
SECOND LORD, ⌜aside⌝ 0257 I wish not so, unless it had been
0258 the fall of an ass, which is no great hurt.
CLOTEN 0259 You’ll go with us?
FIRST LORD 0260 I’ll attend your Lordship.
CLOTEN 0261 40Nay, come, let’s go together.
SECOND LORD 0262 Well, my lord.
They exit.
