Rivers of Music: The Elbe
For its annual holiday concerts, the Consort rejoices with performances of music for the season from the Elbe River basin in Germany. The rippling counterpoint of J.S. Bach’s Wachet auf (Sleepers Wake), composed during his time in Leipzig, is heard alongside Michael Praetorius’s wonderful setting of the same 16th-century Advent text from a century earlier. Complementing the joyous holiday fare is Georg Philip Telemann’s Hamburger Ebb’ und Fluth, a suite of delightfully virtuosic program music depicting the Elbe flowing through his native city of Hamburg. With choir, strings, and continuo.
