Quiz: Shakespeare, love, and lovers

Love and lovers are among the most enduring elements in Shakespeare’s plays, from his comedies and tragedies to his history plays, and his Sonnets and other poems, too. His characters have much to say—and sometimes, sing—on the subject. Try our quiz to see if you can fill in the blanks in some of their lines about love. Romeo and Juliet, perhaps his most iconic lovers, have so much to say about their love that we’ve included quotations from both of them.

If you’d like to see more about love and lovers in Shakespeare’s works, you might enjoy some of our other past quizzes, including setting the lines in order for Sonnet 18 (“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day”), Sonnet 116 (“Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments.”) and the opening speech for Twelfth Night (beginning “If music be the food of love, play on.”).
