Lindsay Alexandra Carter has been charming audiences as Rosalind in Folger Theatre’s As You Like It, playing off of Antoinette Robinson (Celia) in performances that “are bursting with energy” and with rapport that “leads to some of the best scenes in the production.” Before the actors join us at the next Brews and Banter, Folger Spotlight caught up with Lindsay to find out a little bit more about her life off-stage, including her favorite city and preferred board-game-and-drink-pairings.

1. What are some hobbies or interests that you have?

One hobby/interest of mine is letter writing. I love to write people handwritten letters. It might be in part due to my own love for receiving mail, but it is something I will regularly do. Sometimes I have an easier time organizing my thoughts and really expressing my gratitude via the written word. I’m a big believer in the power of a handwritten note.

2. What is your favorite board game?

I love board games. I get terribly competitive, and would bet that I am completely insufferable to play against, but it’s an activity I love to do on a first or second date. I always learn so much about a person while playing. My favorite two player game is Battleship (accompanied by a double IPA) or Chess (with a glass of Bordeaux). Depends on the person and the setting. For multiplayer games, I love Cards Against Humanity, Clue, and Monopoly. I am completely interested in playing Risk but I have yet to have the opportunity to learn and play. Most of my friends are too far along in their training in Risk to accept me as a part of their team. This is also true for me with Dungeons & Dragons. I was skeptical of the whole thing at first, but I recently played my first game and it was a blast! I also don’t mind a good card game. Our cast tends to play often, and we get very into it when we do. Allen McCullough (Duke Senior and Duke Frederick) is a monster at cards and Lorenzo Roberts (Orlando) is equally if not more competitive than myself. They play more often than I do really. Maybe I should play more?

3. What’s the most interesting place you’ve ever been?

The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin at night, Germany.

One of my favorite places I’ve ever been was Berlin. It’s so progressive, and also has a great respect for its own history. Everyone I met there was welcoming and were so well versed in many languages and topics. The art and theater scene was also just cool, and cool is a word I almost never use.  My last great adventure was probably in Berlin. I had almost no plan before arriving but my first day I had to stop into a shop for glasses as I left mine overseas, and I met some amazing people there. After a sparkling water, a beer, and an eye test, I had my week basically planned out for me by new friends. I went into the bunkers of Berlin, on nighttime kayak tours through abandoned parts of the city, and experienced some amazing dancing and cocktails in some of the most beautiful rooftop bars I’ve ever seen. The museums and gardens were also incredible, however Paris may have had them beat on that front.

4. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, do you have any romantic experiences you’d be willing to share?

My stories of love attempts are usually rather long; I have a tendency to be very willful in the affairs of love. There once was a young gentleman who was my best friend and had been secretly in love with me (sometimes I’m oblivious) for about four years. We were cast together in a production of Molière’s The Learned Ladies. He was not cast as my love interest; however, everyday he would write me a poem and sneak it into the book that I read during Act II. That Christmas he would become my boyfriend, and he gifted me a small book filled with all the poems he had ever written for or about me… I can’t help but be a romantic at heart.

5. Finally, what is your favorite cheesy pick-up line?

“You’re like a good production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. You both have a nice Bottom.”
