Read the introduction by cast member Jennie Greenberry:
Hello and welcome to Folger ENCORES. I’m Jennie Greenberry. The Folger has been sharing selections of their plays, music, and spoken word pieces with you in this ENCORES series, and this week we’re revisiting Shakespeare’s Pericles.
Now, this production of Pericles was an amazing collaboration between the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Guthrie Theater, and of course, the Folger. I had the immense pleasure and privilege of playing Marina throughout the entirety of our 13-month run. Now I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that being a part of this production was a life-changing experience, not only because I got to spend so much time with this role and this beautiful play, but I got to spend that time in the company of brilliant artists—everyone, from our director Joe Haj to Wayne Carr who played our Pericles, Jack Herrick our music director and composer, and of course, an army of talented designers, stagehands, technicians, and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the glue that held us all together throughout our production, Gwen Turos, our incomparable stage manager.
Now in this scene, Marina greets Pericles with a song that was composed by our very own Jack Herrick. It was such a pleasure for me to get to sing this every night and I really hope that you’ll enjoy watching it too.
If you would like to know more about Pericles or the Folger, feel free to visit them at their website: folger.edu. We hope you’ll join us for these weekly episodes of ENCORES, highlighting all of the magic that the Folger has to offer. Thank you.
Check back each Friday for a new “from the archives” performance, introduced by some of our favorite artists, showcasing the best of Folger Theatre, Folger Consort, O.B. Hardison Poetry, and lectures.
