Folger Tooltips: new cover-to-cover items in our Digital Image Database

Additions to our Cover-to-cover series have made their way into the Digital Image Database in recent weeks.

Among items you can now view in their entirety online are: 

Our first fully-digitized Second Folio.

Shakespeare, William, 1564-1616. Mr. VVilliam Shakespeares comedies, histories, and tragedies. : Published according to the true originall copies.1632.  STC 22274 Fo.2 no.07.

Formerly the property of St. Alban’s College (the English College), Valladolid, Spain, this copy bears on its titlepage the certificate of a censor for the Inquisition (“Opus auctoritate Sancti officij permissum et expurgatum eadem auctoritate per Guilielmum Sanchæum e Socte Jesu”) along with extensive marks of censorship and expurgations (for instance, this copy is missing Measure for Measure in its entirety!).

An edition of Shakespeare’s works with notes by George Eliot and George H. Lewes:

Ms. notes throughout. Notes in pencil in the hand of George Eliot. Notes in ink in the hand of George H. Lewes. Bookplate: De la Bibiliothèque de John Stuart Mill, Vendue à Avignon. Formerly thought to be Thomas Carlyle’s copy on doubtful authority. In red cloth case binding.
