The Collation

“What manner o’thing is your crocodile?”: March 2019

For the Crocodile of the month, we ask you to look at the title page (ignore the beautiful ink blot by the imprint) and colophon of this book in relation to its call number STC 4811. Is there something a bit unusual here?

As always, leave your guesses in the comments and we’ll be back next week with the answer.

Comments

The book is in Latin and was printed abroad, so strictly it does not belong in STC.
Presumably the subject matter suggests that it was intended at least partly for the English market.

Is the distinction between *apud* Andream Gessnerum and *per* Andream Gessnerum significant?

Since the catechism was created by royal warrant, and was (as the title suggests) for English usage, I imagine it was included in STC for the same reason the missals, etc., printed abroad but for the use of Salisbury were included (as discussed in the introduction to v. 1 of STC, p. xxiii).
